The BEST Broccoli Salad ever…

The BEST Broccoli Salad ever… came from my grandmother, who found it from one of her cousins at a family reunion in Mississippi. Hey, that and church dinners are where a lot of good Southern recipes grew wings. Long before the internet there were women bringing there BEST dishes to set on a table for family they only see once a year to enjoy. I LOVE family reunions! Infact, this particular reunion gathered around an old home place build in the 1800’s. That structure has spoken to me for decades. In Junior high- I wrote and got published a poem about that “Old home Place”. I gave the published piece to my Grandmother as a gift. Years and years went by and I lost all the writing I had done in my youth. Until this past week, when out of the blue came an email. I opened the attachment to see my own handwriting. It was that poem (and many others) on my junior high school notebook paper. You could have scraped me off the floor. Never would I have ever thought I would see those again. My best friend in school, Amy Sanders had kept them… all those years… like some sort of angelic safety deposit box. It’s no Will Shakespeare, but here is that published poem of my youth. The same Old home place that me and my grandmother (Mama Eva) found THE BEST Broccoli Salad recipe ever!

  THE OLD HOME PLACE

It was broken apart an buried in weeds

It was way beyond repair, no one could fix it’s needs.

But my mind went back to the white washed walls…

A mother cooking, children playing in the halls.

A father resting in the porch swing- a train going by.

A simple but perfect life they never thought would die.

But time moves on and so do they,

Some to fairer lands on high- some to find a better way.

Now all alone, scared by time and neglect

It rest on a hill- magestic, yet wrecked.

And Generations from then, I come by to dream over the desolate place.

Although the old home place is not the same, you still can feel it’s grace.

Thinking of the happiness and fears that lye before them,

Sadly I cry in the starlight so dim.

BROCCOLI SALAD

1 head of broccoli (or broccoli slaw …or mixture of the two)

12 slices of Bacon (I now use a container of REAL bacon bits)

1 cup of salted sunflower seeds

1 cup of golden raisins                                                                                                                      (It’s good, believe me… but Jason doesn’t eat raisins & it’s good with out them too)

1 medium red onion

dressing:

1 cup of mayo (use light mayo or better yet PLAIN Greek Yogurt)

1/2 cup of sugar (you can do honey, but I usually splurge with some raw sugar)

2 Tablespoons of Vinegar (a raw apple cider is best)

Mix together, it saves for days in frig… hope you enjoy as much as our family has.

I have seen that… I bet it is good, will have to try. It was so good with that brisket… like a twist on slaw & BBQ. Thanks so much for checking out the VLOG, if you read the story with this- you can see it’s traveled far and been around for a lotta years :)

Love it all! Especially liked that the seed packets are labeled as “Organic”–what else would real seeds be! Got to try this salad–

    • kimb3825 says:

Thanks Jim… always afraid to grab a GMO seed pack, better safe than sorry- Sad we have to look at a “seed” like that. Who would have ever thought, they would mess w/ Gods creation so??? Let me know how your salad turns out :)

Oh yes it is good, didn’t you put cheese in it one one time? Or maybe that was a different recipe. I would love to dip a big old spoon into this, but my little baby Briggs would not be happy the next day. I guess I will save it for later!

  4. That looks really great. I’m always looking for something new and different since I am on a diabetic diet.Even with some substitutions it will be a great recipe.(Ive lost 30 lbs. since 01-09-12 and my doctor says shes really proud of me and told me if I continue on this path I’ll reverse my diabetes. (I had a A1C test last Thursday and she called me later that afternoon elated with my results. When I was diagnosed with my diabetes 03-11-11 it was 8.6 and now with exercise and my diet its 6.3 a record low for me!!:)) Thanks for all your recipes and videos too. I enjoy them greatly. I been homebound due to my medical conditions (I also have A-Fib, and Chronic gout. Problems with severe edema also)and it gives me something to look forward to each week, and I watch you and Jack every day. I miss my daily trip to Greenville as you know I used to be employed by The Greenville News but since Cigna caused me to lose my job due to illness thats why I am at home now. Sorry for bending your ear. Its just great to talk to you. I’m your biggest fan. I’m not the type that likes to have to stay at home after working my entire life. (I’m a type A personality)!!
